How do Texas and New Mexico rank as places for nurses to work?
El Paso, Texas — A lot of nurses are graduating from college this month and setting out on their new careers.
A new survey from the personal finance website, WalletHub, ranks New Mexico as the 3rd best U.S. state to work as a nurse.
While Texas ranked lower, it still finished roughly in the top-third, at No. 17.
New Mexico actually topped the list in a category WalletHub calls "Opportunity and Competition."
That basically means New Mexico offers great pay to nurses throughout their careers compared to other states across the country and will have a growing need for more nurses in the years ahead because of an aging population.
New Mexico's expected to have one of the five biggest populations of people, 65 and older, by the year, 2030.
Texas, on the other hand, is expected to have one of the five smallest 65 and older populations by then, based on their proportion of the state's total population.
Texas also ranks among the five states with the fewest health care facilities per capita.
Overall, the survey found Washington is the best state for nurses to work while Oklahoma ranked as the worst.
